A clean rail and a lubricated chain are different maintenance jobs. Concept2’s Model D support page separates after-use rail cleaning, chain lubrication every 50 hours, and more detailed inspection every 250 hours. It also supplies different calendar intervals for institutional users. Use the schedule for your machine rather than transferring it to a belt-driven rower or another brand. [1]
After use: wipe the monorail
Concept2 says to wipe the monorail after use with a cloth or non-abrasive scouring pad. Its permitted cleaning options include soap and water or glass cleaner. Mineral acids, bleach, and coarse abrasives are excluded.
Keep that instruction scoped to the monorail. It does not mean you should spray glass cleaner into the chain, Performance Monitor, or flywheel. Treat each component according to its own directions. A bottle suitable for one part of the machine is not automatically a universal rower cleaner.
Every 50 hours: lubricate the chain
For the Model D, Concept2 specifies a teaspoon of purified mineral oil, 3-IN-ONE oil, or 20W motor oil. Apply it to a paper towel, rub the towel along the entire chain, and wipe off excess; repeat if needed. Its corresponding interval for institutional users is weekly. [1]
The manufacturer explicitly says not to clean the chain with a cleaner or solvent, giving WD-40 as an example. Do not turn the lubrication step into solvent degreasing. Follow the full maintenance instructions and keep the moving chain controlled rather than reaching into mechanisms.
If several people share the machine, record hours or maintenance dates in one place. Without a shared record, each user may assume someone else lubricated it. A simple log should identify the machine, date, approximate accumulated hours, task completed, and anything unusual noticed.
Every 250 hours: inspect wear and fasteners
Concept2’s detailed inspection interval is every 250 hours of use, or monthly for institutional users. Its checklist includes:
- Inspect the chain for stiff links. Replace it if thorough lubrication does not resolve them.
- Inspect the chain-handle connection. Replace the whole connection if the hole is elongated or the U-bolt is worn halfway through.
- Check screw tightness, including assembly screws.
- Check Performance Monitor arm-joint adjustment.
- Check inside the flywheel for dust with a flashlight and vacuum if needed, following the linked opening and cleaning instructions.
The page also directs owners to the shock-cord adjustment instructions if the handle does not return fully to the fan enclosure. Adjustment and disassembly steps belong to those component-specific instructions; this overview is not a substitute for them. [1]
Do not use a schedule to excuse a worn part
A calendar reminder tells you when to check a machine, not how long a visibly damaged part is safe to use. Concept2 warns that worn or weakened chains, sprockets, swivel connectors, or shock cords can cause injury. When a part’s condition is doubtful, it strongly advises immediate replacement and specifies genuine Concept2 parts.
If you find wear between scheduled checks, stop using the rower and resolve it. Contact Concept2 if you cannot identify the part or judge its condition. Cleaning the rail or adding oil does not repair an elongated connection or a damaged component.
