About Home Gym Basics

We're a team of home gym enthusiasts who got tired of reviews written by people who clearly never lifted a weight in their garage. So we built something different.

Who We Are

The Home Gym Basics Team is a group of home and garage gym owners who've collectively spent more hours on lifting forums, sifting through Amazon reviews, and watching garage gym YouTube than we'd like to admit. We're not personal trainers, fitness influencers, or sponsored athletes. We're just people who wanted to build practical home gyms without getting ripped off.

Our team includes people who've built gyms at every budget level — from a $300 setup in a studio apartment to a full $3,000 garage gym with a power rack, barbell, and all the accessories. We know what trade-offs actually matter and which ones the marketing copy conveniently doesn't mention.

Our Methodology: Aggregation-First

Here's what makes us different: we don't pretend to have personally tested every product.

Most home gym review sites either (a) review the one or two products they happen to own, (b) copy specs from manufacturer pages, or (c) take sponsorship money and call it "testing." None of those approaches serve you.

Instead, we use an aggregation-first methodology — we systematically collect and analyze data from thousands of real owners:

Our Data Sources

  • Amazon verified reviews — We analyze star distribution, common complaint themes, and review recency
  • Reddit communities — r/homegym (1.4M members) and r/weightroom provide real long-term owner feedback
  • YouTube review analysis — Channels like Garage Gym Reviews (Coop Mitchell), Garage Gym Lab, and Basement Brandon document real-world use
  • Manufacturer specs and official documentation — For weight capacities, dimensions, and material specifications
  • Forum threads — GarageGymReviews.com community, IronGarm, and Stronger by Science forums

What "Based on X verified reviews" Means

When we write "Based on analysis of 4,200 verified reviews," we mean we've looked at the full review distribution, identified the most common positive and negative themes, and quantified how frequently specific complaints or praises appear. We use percentage breakdowns to give you a real picture — not just cherry-picked quotes.

When a product has 87% of reviewers rating durability 4+ stars, that tells you something concrete. When 23% of negative reviews mention the same assembly issue, that's a real pattern worth knowing about — not an outlier one reviewer experienced.

What We Recommend and Why

Our recommendations are entirely driven by the data. We have no relationships with manufacturers. We don't receive free products. We don't accept "sponsored content" money. Our only revenue comes from Amazon affiliate commissions when readers click our links and buy something.

That affiliate relationship means we have a financial incentive to recommend products people actually like and buy — because happy buyers don't return products or leave negative reviews. It aligns our incentives with yours: we want to send you to products that will satisfy you.

Our Focus: The Home Gym Niche

We cover home and garage gym equipment specifically. We're not a general fitness site. We focus on:

  • Power racks and squat stands
  • Barbells and weight plates
  • Dumbbells (fixed and adjustable)
  • Budget gym builds and prioritization guides
  • Flooring, storage, and accessories

We are not experts in cardio equipment, yoga, or group fitness. We lift weights in garages and basements, and that's what we write about.
